Exhibition Presentations

Before I put up my work for the exhibition, I decided to plan out a couple of ideas to see what would look the best. I first looked at pinterest to gain some inspiration, however I found it very difficult to find images of exhibition set ups, let alone ones that were relevant to my work.

I took a different approach by thinking of specific keywords that related to my project and objects/display methods that related to them.

Trapped

A key theme in the last stages of my project was about being trapped in your own skin, I thought this would be relevant to my display by thinking of physical ways I could show being trapped. My idea was to create some sort of cage or barrier between the viewer and the garment, however I think this idea is impractical because it impairs the view of the garment and I think it would be very time-consuming to create the barrier.

This next design is obviously quite simple but I though it was a good idea to show an alternative approach to showing the garment instead of on a mannequin. The downside to this is that it doesn’t show the back of the garment and also doesn’t show the idea of it being a straitjacket.

My project features themes of medicine and malfunction so I think it would be good if I could include some stereotypical medical equipment to solidify that idea for the audience. Something as simple as a medical curtain could be good however I don’t have access to one of those, so if I do decide to go with this idea, I may have to improvise. I also thought the addition of a quote or excerpt about malfunction would be highly relevant and it would give the viewer something to read and think about. I was thinking I would use the quote in the tagline of my blog.

I developed the previous idea more by changing the layout of everything. I think putting the curtain behind would take up less room and would give my garment and the quote more contrast as they would stand out. That way I would be able to hang my design boards on the right for people to see the garment in situ and the predestined process. I have also featured a design without the curtain because I’m not sure if I will continue with the curtain idea if I have to improvise with something less relevant.

I did think about having a shelf with some materials that I used eg. A jar with a scoby in it, as it shows another layer of my creation process and looks itself like it’s malfunctioning. I probably won’t do this because I think it could make the area cluttered and I just want my display to be completely relevant and focusing purely on malfunction.

This is the final presentation of my work which is very similar to what I had proposed in my designs. The only difference is that I featured my design boards next to each other as they were too long to go in single file. I also changed the quote because my original quote was too long and complicated. Overall I’m happy with my presentation and I think it looks very professional.
