Visual Studies: Pelvis // Trisha Thompson Adams

My final primary visual study, before I began to develop my project to organs, was of a pelvis. My vision was to create a visual study of different parts of the skeleton that can malfunction in some way. Maybe there aren’t loads of malfunctions in the pelvis, however, there are many disorders related to fertility.

This was the main reason for creating this oil pastel study and to acquire further knowledge around how our body works through shape and form. I created this drawing on an a2 piece of paper so that I could explore scale and detail instead of relying on the size of my sketchbook.

At the time as I was drawing this, I was completing research relating to fertility and fruit (see next blog post) and I thought about a way that I could develop this study.

Since the pelvic region is the area in which a baby has to pass through drawing labour, I wanted to develop my study with an alternative symbol for children; fruit.

I will talk more about how this symbolism relates to fertility and function in my next post.
A big inspiration to me was an artist called Trisha Thompson Adams, again she was an artist that I researched from the start and just knew I wanted to be influenced by her work. I love the texture of her work, which definitely inspired the smoothness of my oil pastel. I also love how she links nature in with the organs, seeing as though nature plays a very important role in ensuring the function of all our body systems.

I’m unable to post a picture of the final photoshopped study of the pelvis and fruit, however, I think it was successful in conveying a different kind of in-depth function. This piece talked about function conceptually and I think that is a route I will explore later on in my project. While I do want to look at function physically, I think this project will lead more to a type of malfunction that you can see initially and is a lot harder to restore to normal function.
