Visual Studies: Detailed Sketch // Adonna Khare

After creating a series of ‘messy’ style drawings, I felt as though I needed some studies that reflected the delicateness and intricate blemishes of the skulls. While the function of a skull is to protect the brain and provide structure, it is also very delicate, which is what I wanted to show in my work.

When I look at Adonna’s work, even though it’s unusual and quirky, I find it quite peaceful and relaxing. I also like how she has used detailed patches of shading to create a realistic 3D object. She has informed my approach by inspiring me to be detailed and use different kinds of shading than I would usually use.

I think this study was successful because I wanted to portray an underlying message about how delicate and detailed skulls are, especially babies. This is why I decided to use a smaller scale to my larger drawings and also to provide a variety of sizes to show my techniques. However, I have found that as the scale gets smaller, it may be quicker, but I found it harder to create detail, which is why I prefer working on a larger scale.

This study has informed my next piece because I wanted further to convey the idea of the function of skulls and focus on the growth between child to adult. During my research, I found a great book on skeletons which gave me a taster as to how the skull is formed and the role of sutures as we age.
